SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

CARPENTRY

Empowering disadvantaged young Mauritians through developing carpentry skills. Many leave school early, lacking employable skills, putting them at risk. Our program identifies, among others, unemployed early school leavers, teaching carpentry from basics to advanced techniques. We create high-quality furniture and decor for sale. Additionally, we provide training in design, costing, sales, and market trends. Mentorship is a cornerstone, building character and life skills for a successful future.

SEWING

Transforming lives through our sewing program: We empower and uplift young Mauritian women from underprivileged backgrounds, instilling in them a skillset that transcends mere stitches. Our comprehensive approach combines expert mentorship and invaluable counseling alongside hands-on training, forging a formidable foundation for their futures. These empowered individuals not only learn; they earn, becoming beacons of hope in their communities, as they contribute essential income to their households. This program is a beacon of hope, a testament to the transformative power of education and skill-building.

Running in 2 main areas, the Hope House workshop and a community in Baie du Tombeau , our sewing project produces soft home decor, upholstery, fashion items, surfboard covers , corporate gifts and kiddies toys.  Not only creating beautiful products, but seeing women empowered to earn and benefit themselves and their families is the gem of this project.

MENTORSHIP

SALT SURFERS

This program offers underprivileged youth a chance to join a positive, trendy community where they can truly belong. Sessions focus on physical training to boost strength and endurance, with a special track for non-swimmers at Salt Swimmers. Mentorship is central, providing crucial support for those from challenging family backgrounds. Through this blend of fitness and guidance, we empower them to make positive life decisions.

Salt Surfers is a “mentor through sport” program. Despite living close to the coast, teens from the local communities seldom get the opportunity to enjoy discovering water sports. Being able to swim is not a given. Salt Surfers has 2 accredited swimming coaches helping each individual improve their swimming skills and water safety. Meeting on the beach every week, the coaches and the teens from different areas, exercise together, surf, team build and are mentored.

SALT SWIMMERS

Salt Swimmers is a heartfelt initiative in Mauritius, where despite being surrounded by water, many children miss out on the joy of swimming. This project aims to change that for disadvantaged communities, offering them the chance to learn this vital skill. Beyond swimming, it serves as a platform to educate and mentor about the significance of preserving our precious ocean and island.

GIRLS MAKE WAVES

“Girls Make Waves empowers women in disadvantaged communities by teaching them to swim and conquer their fear of the ocean. It’s a transformative experience, offering them a break from their daily routines of household chores. Through shared exercises and learning about water conditions, friendships flourish, and bodies strengthen. This newfound skill is passed down from mothers to children, creating a ripple effect of water safety in the community. Witnessing their growing confidence and self-worth is truly inspiring.”

BAZ

A group of surfers, exploring life, building friendship and learning to look out for each other, get together every week. Baz Lor Lakaz fosters an inclusive outlook, caring for the whole person. Our end aim is that the transformed teenagers would positively impact their environment to the benefit of the communities of Mauritius.
